Should You Repair Or Replace Your Metal Fence?

Whether you have a chain link or wrought iron fence, chances are that, over time, it’ll become damaged and start to show its age.

It’s important that any issues be addressed as soon as possible, but you may be faced with having to decide between repairing or replacing your fence. Here’s how to determine the best course of action. IDENTIFY THE TYPE OF DAMAGE

Scuffs, marks and general wear are to be expected, especially as a fence gets on in years. This is also true of rust spots. Cosmetic damage of this kind, however, can be remedied with a fresh coat of paint or a quick rust removal job. It’s crucial that small areas of rust be dealt with quickly, as they can spread faster than you think. This is especially important for wrought iron fences, as they’re more expensive to replace in the event of widespread rust damage. If the damage is structural (for example, there’s a warped or broken section), then a partial replacement is likely your best option, especially for iron fences. The damaged areas are removed and replacements are welded to the remaining sections. Chain link fences, on the other hand, are typically easier to simply repair.

EVALUATE THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE When the damage is extensive, the line between cosmetic and structural defects begins to blur, making it difficult to decide what to do. For instance, widespread rust can be more than a cosmetic issue if it’s bad enough that the structural integrity of the fence is compromised. This is a big problem if you rely on your fence to keep pets and kids safe, or if your driveway gate is attached to it. If your fence has multiple broken or warped sections, then replacing it is likely the best course of action. However, less visible structural issues such as loose fence posts may also require a whole new installation, although that’ll depend on the cause. The best thing to do is to contact a contractor to diagnose the problem. CONSIDER YOUR BUDGET Even if repairs are possible, consider how long they’re likely to last and how much you’ll pay in the long run. In some cases, it may be advantageous to get a replacement to reduce your long-term costs. We provide free estimates, so give us a call to learn more about your options!
